Etymology
smoke + explosion
Noun
en-noun|sg=smoke explosion
#firefighting An extreme fire behavior phenomenon in which a mixture of products of combustion (such as carbon monoxide), pyrolysis products, and air are ignited explosively within a compartment upon contact with a source of ignition. Conditions for a smoke explosion require that the fuel/air mixture be less than 600°C, otherwise it would have already experienced autoignition. The term smoke explosion is often used (incorrectly) as a synonym for backdraft which is a completely different extreme fire behavior phenomenon.
